Sheriff’s Deputy Gerald Schaefer was the poster boy for the death penalty – tailor-made for Old Sparky.
Only the U.S. Supreme Court, hitting the pause button on executions, saved the monster’s life. More than two decades later, a knife in the guts ended Schaefer’s prison sentence.
The Florida man – aka Killer Cop, the Hangman and the Butcher of Blind Creek – was convicted for the 1972 mutilation murders of two teenage girls in Port St. Lucie. He is suspected of at least 26 murders in the Sunshine State.
Prosecutor Robert Stone described Schaefer as “the most sexually deviant person” he had ever encountered. But his life sentence was abruptly abandoned courtesy of another con in December 1995.
