As she was staring down child abuse charges in 2023, Becky Hamber said she and her wife were being “persecuted” as part of a plot orchestrated by the children’s aid society for “political” reasons.

She made the declaration in one of a series of videos while out on bail in 2023 on charges of unlawful confinement and assault related to one of the two boys she and her wife, Brandy Cooney, had been trying to adopt. The boy’s older brother had been found unresponsive and soaking wet in the couple’s Burlington basement on Dec. 21, 2022, but the pair weren’t charged with murder until February 2024, at which point they were detained in jail. Both boys’ identities are covered by a publication ban.
