New Cal head coach Tosh Lupoi has already had his first big win.
On Saturday, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that star freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele will remain with the Golden Bears in 2026. A five-star quarterback in the 2025 class, Sagapolutele impressed as a true freshman this season and was expected to have a significant transfer portal market.
A longtime Cal commit, Sagapolutele ultimately flipped to Oregon on national signing day last year. However, just weeks later, he opted to enter the transfer portal and ultimately landed in Berkeley. He started every game as a true freshman, completing 63.6% of his passes for 3,117 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
The Golden Bears finished 7-5 in the regular season, not enough for coach Justin Wilcox to hold onto his job. However, as Lupoi takes over at his alma mater, he now has a major offensive piece to build his team around.
