Toronto police are warning the public about an increase in pickpocketing and theft following vehicle break-ins in the downtown area during the holiday season.
Thieves are targeting victims who are downtown for special events or holiday shopping, officers said in a news release on Friday.
“Items are being stolen from unsuspecting victims, while items are left unattended, or from vehicles with parcels/valuables that are visible to thieves,” police wrote in the release.
To prevent becoming victims of theft, police say you should be hyperaware of belongings such as cellphones and wallets when attending holiday events that draw large crowds.
Personal items can be stored securely with cross-body straps, zipped bags and internal pockets.
