A devastating house fire in Edenderry, County Offaly, has resulted in the tragic deaths of a four-year-old boy and a woman in her 60s. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, December 6, 2025, at approximately 7.45pm in Castleview Park. Emergency services, including the Offaly Fire and Rescue Service and the National Ambulance Service, responded swiftly to the scene. Upon extinguishing the fire, they discovered the remains of the two victims. A woman in her 50s was also found at the location and has been transported to a Midlands hospital, where she is receiving treatment for serious injuries. Gardaí have launched a murder investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire, which they believe was deliberately set. The property has been declared a crime scene, and a technical examination is currently underway by the Garda Technical Bureau. A Garda spokesperson stated, "An Garda Síochána has commenced a murder investigation into all the circumstances of a fatal house fire that occurred at a domestic residence in Castleview Park, Edenderry, Co. Offaly on the evening of Saturday 6th December, 2025." The remains of the deceased have been removed from the scene, and post-mortem examinations will be conducted by the Assistant State Pathologist, Margot Bolster, at the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses who were in the vicinity of Castleview Park or nearby roads between 7.00pm and 8.00pm on the evening of the fire. They are particularly interested in any dashcam footage or images that may assist in the investigation. Local councillor Claire Murray-Smale described the incident as a "horrific tragedy" and extended her condolences to the families affected. She expressed gratitude to the emergency services for their prompt response. The investigation is being coordinated from an incident room at Tullamore Garda Station, and a Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to support the families involved.
