Two fighter jets were launched from a military base in a NATO country on Sunday due to the incursion of an unidentified aircraft into its airspace. The Royal Netherlands Air Force dispatched two jets from the Volkel military base as part of a Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) protocol. This procedure is activated when an aircraft enters airspace without proper identification. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence explained, "We alternate these activities with Belgium and cover the entire Benelux region." QRAs are initiated several times throughout the year in response to such incidents. The exact nature of the unidentified aircraft remains unclear. A representative from the Ministry of Defence suggested it could potentially be a drone, stating, "but not one you'd buy at MediaMarkt." Other possibilities include a passenger plane that temporarily lost contact with ground control or another type of unmanned vehicle. This incident follows a recent trend of drone sightings over military installations and airports across Europe. Just two weeks prior, drones were spotted over Volkel Air Base, prompting Air Force personnel to prepare weapons. However, those objects flew away and were never recovered. The increasing frequency of such incidents has raised concerns about airspace security in the region, highlighting the need for vigilance in monitoring unidentified aircraft.
