At least 25 people have been killed and several injured after a massive fire broke out at a popular nightclub in North Goa’s Arpora village late Saturday night, triggering a criminal probe, political fallout and nationwide shock.

The incident: The fire broke out after midnight at Birch by Romeo Lane, a crowded nightclub in Arpora village, around 25 km from Panaji. The club had opened only last year.

Death toll: 25 people have died, Goa Police confirmed. Most victims were kitchen staff, including three women. Three to four tourists were also among the deceased.

Cause of deaths: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said three victims died due to burns, while the remaining succumbed to suffocation.
