This year, the Maldives became the first country in the world to implement a generational tobacco ban . But ahead of its enforcement on Nov. 1, two European destinations have also announced major public smoking bans.

Known for their smoker-friendly al fresco dining, both countries have already caused drastic changes in travelers' experience since the announcement of their new tobacco restrictions.

In July, France officially banned smoking in outdoor areas, particularly where children are typically present, with some exemptions for certain spaces and tobacco products.

The smoker's haven is now working on raising its "first tobacco-free generation" by 2032. Spain followed two months later, proposing an outdoor smoking law that is even stricter than France's fully legalized tobacco
