HOUGHTON – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will conduct inspections on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock this week, requiring bridge lifts. According to a release from the Michigan Department of Transportation, the various test lifts will be performed at night, from 7 p.m. to midnight on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The lifts are planned to last 10 to 15 minutes each. Between lifts, traffic will be allowed to clear. Resulting closures will affect vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle traffic. During the inspections, the bridge may be raised to the intermediate position during periods of lower traffic. This schedule is weather-dependent and may be adjusted.
According to MDOT, this work will help ensure continued safe and reliable operation of the bridge.
