NEWPORT, Tenn. (WVLT) - A Newport funeral home held a ceremony to honor the soldiers that were stationed at Pearl Harbor in 1941.

Manes Funeral Home honored the nine Cocke County men who survived the attack. These men have all since passed away.

“This is the 84th anniversary of Pearl Harbor’s bombing. It was much like a morning here in Newport. The skies were blue...the Japanese did the surprise attack,” said AMVETS Commander of Post 75, Rob Watkins.

“They killed over 2,000 of our military troops and some civilians that were there as well,” Watkins added.

The ceremony included a “ringing of the bell” for each man’s name to honor their sacrifice and what they had went through.

The U.S. Department of War says more than 3,500 American troops were killed or hurt in the attack.
