Although most of the attention so far has been on the races for governor and other statewide offices in 2026, a couple of contests for state House seats are already starting to take shape.

Just 11 people had filed to enter legislative races by Friday, promising at least two competitive Democratic primaries in June and a general election race in a closely divided district along the U.S.-Mexico border, where the Democratic incumbent won by less than 2 percentage points last year.

Two Democrats who have filed so far are vying to represent districts in Northern New Mexico, a deep-blue region where the primary decides the election in most districts: Sarah Boses and Nancy Jane Wright.
