Endless talk and complaints filled social media and talk radio earlier this year about the 2025-26 Edmonton Oilers not having an identity.
I wanted to object such criticism, as this team had been two the last two Stanley Cup Finals. Can’t we give them any credit here?
But I kept quiet because I was also stymied by the question: What is this team’s identity?
Is it a fast team? An aggressive one? A two-way juggernaut? An offence-first lightning attack of a squad?
It was none of those things. I had no answer.
But if you look back and go over what Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch has said about his team one thing stands out, that Knoblauch always understood the identity of his team, always grasped what was wrong with it, but he and the team were unable to fix things until now.
