A 10-hour debate in the Lok Sabha, marking the 150th anniversary of India's national song, Vande Mataram, was initiated on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the charge, which will be followed by a one-day special session in the Rajya Sabha led by Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday.
While PM Modi revisited the song's rich history, its role in the freedom struggle, he alleged that crucial stanzas of Vande Mataram were removed in 1937, calling the act a "division and partition of the song". He argued that the "partition" of the song sowed the seeds of the country's eventual Partition. The Prime Minister also accused the Congress and PM Jawaharlal Nehru of compromising on the national song, stating, "Vande Mataram was divided first, and then the country was divided" .
