Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday initiated the Lok Sabha debate marking 150 years of the national song Vande Mataram.
Delivering a nearly one-hour address, the Prime Minister described Vande Mataram as a "powerful response to the British rule" that continues to inspire the nation.
He recalled that Mahatma Gandhi too revered the song during the freedom movement and even considered it suitable as the National Anthem.
Modi questioned why Vande Mataram was "wronged for decades," asking, "What was the power that outweighed the emotions of Bapu? Why was Vande Mataram betrayed?"
