Green Line riders, brace yourselves: Starting Monday, the MBTA is shutting down the core of the system for half of December to rip out wooden infrastructure dating back to the 1890s.

In the holiday season runup to Christmas, the T plans to suspend service on the core tunnel and all four Green Line branches for 15 consecutive days, from Dec. 8 through Dec. 22. Plans call for crews to use the unfettered access to infrastructure to fully replace a wooden overhead-catenary "trough" that is over a century old.

The channel holds the system's overhead wires and has long outlived its design lifespan. Federal inspectors flagged it for replacement, and MBTA engineers say continued patchwork repairs are no longer viable.
