A search effort on the Bear Mountain Bridge was suspended Sunday, Dec. 7, after a person jumped into the Hudson River while speaking with police, officials said.
The incident was reported at 10:32 a.m., according to a statement from the Piermont Fire Department and New York State Police.
Emergency crews were first told the person was still on the bridge and speaking with State Police. After several attempts to help from State Police, State Park Police, and Westchester County Police, the person went into the water, firefighters and police said.
Marine units and dive teams were called in to search the area. One team arrived with divers and surface crew members and began scanning the river north of the bridge. Crews used sonar to check several possible locations, but the rising tide and strong current made it too dangerous to continue.
The scene was then turned over to the police. Firefighters extended condolences to the person’s family.
New York State Police said they would not release more information until the person's family is notified and their body is recovered.
