The discovery of a woman's headless body sparked riots and by angry vigilantes armed with axes and bows and arrows.

A mob of around 5,000 people torched 50 houses belonging to Bengali people in Mariwada, India.

Shocking pictures show burnt out houses and scenes of devastation after the rampage with villagers being forced to shelter in the charred remains of the buildings.

The unrest was triggered when Lake Podiami's body was pulled from a river and a Bengali man was arrested for her murder. Police said her head has yet to be found

Lake is said to be from Koya tribe
