A Virginia man is accused of turning a road rage encounter into a dangerous showdown over the weekend after police say he twice tried to hit another driver and then sped toward a woman sitting inside a car at a busy intersection.

Police said Demarcus Antonio Byrdsong, 28, of Woodbridge, was behind the wheel around 12:33 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at Richmond Highway and Powells Creek Boulevard in Woodbridge, when chaos broke out.

A 29-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were stopped behind him when the light turned green, and his car didn’t move.

That’s when things got weird.

Police said the man walked up to check on Byrdsong, who suddenly threw his car in reverse and almost hit him twice. Instead of leaving it there, officers said Byrdsong swung the car into a U-turn and punched the gas toward the woman still sitting inside the victims’ vehicle.

No one was struck. No injuries were reported, but the situation could have gone south fast.

A short time later, officers spotted Byrdsong’s car near Dumfries Road and pulled him over. Police said he was detained without any trouble.

Byrdsong is charged with attempted malicious wounding. His bond was set at $5,000 secured. His court date is pending.
