New research has raised concerning information about law-breaking behaviour among young drivers in the UK. Nearly half of younger motorists confess to unlawfully checking or composing phone messages whilst driving, new research has revealed. ‌

Charity IAM RoadSmart, which commissioned the study involving 2,025 UK drivers, warned that many novice motorists "struggle to detach themselves from the distractive nature of a smart phone". The organisation highlighted that messaging, social media engagement and video conversations are "rife" among youthful drivers. ‌

A total of 43% of participants aged 17-24 admitted to illegally writing or checking phone messages whilst at the wheel within the past 12 months. This figure drops dramatically to 29% for drivers aged 35-44
