JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A Missouri lawmaker has filed legislation that would allow people living in the same household to seek court orders for the temporary removal of weapons from someone who poses an immediate danger.
State Rep. Steve Butz, a Democrat, said his proposal for the 2026 Missouri legislative session would create an “extreme risk” order of protection. The measure aims to prevent tragedies like a 2023 school shooting at a St. Louis high school, where the shooter’s family had tried to have his gun removed, but law enforcement said their hands were tied.
“I really wanted to file a bill that narrowly defined who could alert law enforcement, get a court order to get the weapons on a temporary basis out of the home,” Butz said.
