DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - As holiday celebrations ramp up and temperatures continue to drop, veterinarians say this time of year can be especially dangerous for pets.

They say cold weather, holiday decorations and extra food around the house can create a perfect storm of risks for household animals.

Cold weather risks

When temperatures drop below freezing, pets can get frostbite and hypothermia just like people, according to an Associated Press article.

The areas most at risk are their ears, paws and tails.

For puppies and small short-haired breeds, owners may need to consider putting them in a sweater to keep them warm.
