INDIANAPOLIS — Inside the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department training academy Tuesday, 26 new recruits — 24 men and two women — took an oath of office to begin their journey as the department’s newest officers in training.

“This job will demand much of you, but will also give you purpose, pride, and an opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives every single day,” IMPD Chief Chris Bailey told the group.

This marks IMPD’s 34th recruit class and one of its larger ones, which has repeatedly become a focus for the department as they remain several hundred officers short of a full force.

IMPD leaders say recruitment continues to be a priority.
