The Calgary Police Service launched its first checkstop blitz of the season on the weekend, targeting impaired driving.

Calgary police stopped more than 1,000 vehicles to begin a month-long effort, looking for drivers impaired by either drugs or alcohol..

Throughout the month of December, CPS and its agency partners will step up enforcement and education efforts through the checkstop program.

Two checkstops were held on the weekend, including one on Saturday, which was National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day.

More than 700 drivers were stopped along Stoney Trail S.W. and Fish Creek Boulevard.
