Manitoba RCMP have launched their annual holiday checkstop campaign, warning motorists to expect an increased police presence on roads and highways throughout December.
The campaign, which starts this weekend, will see officers conducting mandatory alcohol and drug screenings for drivers at vehicle stops. Police will be using screening devices to test for impairment.
Insp. Robert Wuskynyk, head of Manitoba RCMP Traffic Services, strongly urged anyone planning to consume drugs or alcohol over the holidays to arrange a safe ride home.
“You can avoid a criminal charge and save lives by arranging for a designated driver or calling a cab, rideshare or Operation Red Nose to get you home,” Wuskynyk said in a recent statement.
The reminder comes as the RCMP reports a high number of impairment-
