A driver found themselves in a precarious position on Monday afternoon after crashing over a guardrail and down a Carroll County embankment — and bringing power lines with him, fire officials say.

Gamber & Community Fire Company crews were called to Louisville Road in Finksburg shortly before 5:15 p.m. on Dec. 8, where there were reports of a single-vehicle crash with a driver trapped, according to the agency.

The crash led to a curious series of events that involved the calling and canceling of a Maryland State Police helicopter.

Paramedics arrived and reported a “working rescue” after finding the vehicle down a slope with heavy damage.

Fire officials said the SUV had gone off the roadway, over a guardrail, and into brush, bringing down a utility pole and several electrical wires across the road.

Crews worked around the downed electrical lines to free the trapped driver from the wreckage, officials said.

Additional units from Reese and Sykesville were requested for support.

A Maryland State Police helicopter was requested for transport but later cancelled, officials said. The victim was taken by an ambulance to Sinai Hospital.

Reese’s engine established a landing zone before the airlift was called off. Engine 134 remained on scene for safety as the roadway stayed shut down.

During the crash response, Gamber units were also dispatched to separate calls for an electrical odor at a Royal Farms on Route 32 and Route 91, and a medical emergency on Poole Road off Cherry Tree Lane.
