(NBC NEWS) - Raging flames leaped from an apartment building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side Tuesday, raining debris onto the sidewalk and spewing smoke across the cityscape, NBC News reports .

The fire broke out at a six-story building on 107th Street and Amsterdam around 8:20 a.m., according to the FDNY. It’s thought to house about 40 units.

Chopper 4 showed the entire top floor consumed by flames, with black smoke billowing from under the rooftop. Fire appeared to chew through the roof as well, approaching firefighters as they tried to attack it from the side.

Part of the left side of the building also caved in, raining flaming debris onto the street. A large chunk fell right next to a responding fire engine.

There was no immediate word on injuries, nor a possible cause.
