A dead body in late stages of decomposition was found inside a home in Chattooga County on Monday.

The Chattooga County Sheriff's Office said the victim may have been dead for more than a year. The body was found in a home south of Holland, off Highway 100.

Investigators did not find any signs of forced entry, and they believe the victim lived alone.

As of Monday, December 8, the investigation was still in early stages, and investigators were attempting to find and notify next of kin.

"At this point, we do not feel that there is safety concern for the area residents. More information will be released at a later time," said Sheriff Mark Schrader.

Investigators will send the body to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation medical examiner's office, the sheriff added.
