MADISON (WKOW) -- A new Wisconsin state law stiffens penalties for people convicted in cases of human trafficking and trafficking of children.

Gov. Tony Evers (D-WI) signed Assembly Bill 265, now 2025 Wisconsin Act 56, on Tuesday, implementing a mandatory minimum sentence for human trafficking and trafficking a child.

“Crimes of this nature—most especially when it comes to our kids—should be punishable by the full extent of the law,” Gov. Evers said. “With this bill, we are helping ensure that we’re protecting some of our most vulnerable youth and holding predators accountable, most especially when they prey on our kids.”

The law also increases the statute of limitations for prosecuting human trafficking cases.
