YORK, Maine —

An 81-year-old Massachusetts woman was killed Monday in a crash on Interstate 95 in Maine, according to state police.

At approximately 3:14 p.m., Maine State troopers responded to a crash at Mile 5 southbound in York. The preliminary investigation indicates a tractor-trailer was stopped with a mechanical malfunction in the breakdown lane.

While the tractor-trailer was stopped, a 2014 Toyota sedan, being driven by Janice Goldsmith, 81, of Needham, struck the rear of the tractor-trailer, state police said.

Goldsmith was pronounced dead at the scene.

The operator of the tractor-trailer had placed reflective warning triangles in the breakdown lane as required by law, state police said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
