RANKIN COUNTY — A Rankin County detention officer was seriously injured Sunday night when an inmate allegedly attacked her and bit off part of her eyelid and eyebrow, according to sheriff’s officials.
Sgt. Stephanie Dodd responded to a disturbance around 8 p.m. Dec. 8 at the cell of inmate Monica Gandy at the Rankin County Adult Detention Center, authorities said. Gandy, who had been indicted on charges of retaliation against a public servant and attempted grand larceny, refused verbal commands before the confrontation.
When Dodd opened the cell door, Gandy began punching her, officials said. The struggle moved to the ground, where Gandy allegedly bit off a portion of Dodd’s eyelid and eyebrow.
