WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - A man that the U.S. Department of Justice described as being a Mexican national residing in the United States illegally, faces 20 years in prison for “violently attacking a federal law enforcement officer” in Wichita.

Court documents show that 23-year-old Diego Barron-Esquivel pleaded guilty to one count of forcible assault of a federal officer.

In the crime reported on Feb. 28, the U.S. Department of Justice said that Barron-Esquivel assaulted and strangled an ICE Deportation officer, in Wichita “performing his official duties.”

The Justice Department said the officer was injured in the attack.

“Violence against law enforcement is completely unacceptable and will be dealt with very seriously,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser. “Our society would cease to
