MACON, Ga. — Six months after Macon-Bibb County rolled out a series of criminal justice reforms aimed at reducing crowding inside the Bibb County jail, Sheriff David Davis says the inmate population has not dropped — and in recent weeks has climbed.

The county launched six initiatives on June 10, announcing a plan to release up to 150 nonviolent offenders under electronic monitoring. At the time, the jail held about 1,016 people, roughly 50 over its stated capacity of 966.

But Davis said the numbers have not moved in the direction county leaders hoped.

“Today we have 1,023 inmates in the jail,” he said in an interview. “The inmate population has gone up in the last few weeks to almost 1,050.”
