SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - A newly shared slice of history gives Missourians a vivid look at one of the most unusual sporting events of the 1920s: the transcontinental footrace commonly called the “Bunion Derby.”
The State Historical Society of Missouri has released rare film footage of the race as it passed through Springfield in 1928.
Promoted by C.C. Pyle , the race began in Los Angeles and ended in New York. Some 200 runners set out on the cross-country course and followed what would become historic Route 66 into Missouri. The newly surfaced footage captures part of that journey, including the moment the pack entered Springfield, cheered on by crowds lining the streets.
