STATEWIDE, Colo. (KKTV) - Driving during the winter season can bring an increase in wildlife crashes on Colorado roads.
Colorado State Patrol said that 431 crashes involving wildlife were investigated just in December 2024.
According to troopers, most of these crashes happen between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., and between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m.
To avoid crashes involving wildlife, they said drivers should slow down, use high beams when safe and scan for animals. If a crash is unavoidable, they say you should brake firmly in a straight line, and refrain from swerving.
“However, if you don’t have time and there is traffic behind you, the right choice is to drive through, keeping in the lane, but with a slight angle towards the butt of the animal ONLY if by the white side lane line,” Colorado State Pat
