Robert W. Hampton of Bourne, a US Navy veteran, died on December 3. He was 87.
Spending most of his life as a craftsman, his early years were spent working with his father in boatyards learning how to build wooden boats. These skills would later be put into use building a boat with his two grandsons, Kaleb and Brayden Hampton.
At age 18 he enlisted in the US Navy, becoming part of the Navy Seabees, where he got the opportunity to travel and see other parts of the world. Upon being honorably discharged from the Navy he went to work at the Marine Biological Laboratory as head of the carpentry shop for many years; it was in Woods Hole that he met his future wife, Carolyn S. Burke.
