SMITHERS, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A volunteer fire department that’s been in operation since 1948 is closing its doors.

The Smithers Volunteer Fire Department will be shutting down.

The city released a statement to clarify the reasoning behind the closure, saying issues plagued the department for more than 10 years, citing problems during that time like financial mismanagement, lack of effective leadership and training, and low recruitment rates.

According to the city, the Boomer and Montgomery volunteer fire departments will assume coverage for the area.
