The Ocean County Sheriff’s Office warned the public about a phone scam where someone pretended to be a member of their office to steal thousands of dollars from a resident.
The scammer claimed to be a captain from the office and told the resident they had two outstanding warrants for “failure to appear” and contempt of court, according to a statement from the office .
They instructed the resident to turn themselves in with $10,000 in cash and even texted them a phony arrest warrant with the resident’s name typed into it, the office said.
“This is a scam,” the office said. “Our agency does not contact individuals by phone demanding money.”
The office added that they do not send warrants through text messages and do not accept cash or any form of payment to resolve a warrant.
