Alton Gwynn “Schooner” Nowell Jr., a beloved resident of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Nov. 21, 2025, at the age of 80.

Born on Aug. 10, 1945, Schooner lived a vibrant life filled with family, community service and a passion for adventure.

Schooner was the son of the late Alton Gwynn Nowell and Peggy Lou Futrelle Nowell. He attended Virginia Episcopal School for high school and received a degree in business from the University of North Carolina. During his time at UNC, he was an active member of the Zeta Psi fraternity and the Order of Gorgon’s Head. A lifelong Tarheel fan, win or lose he enjoyed watching every game with friends and family.
