Firefighters made an unexpected discovery when they responded to a 999 call to report smoke billowing from a Coventry shop. The alarm was raised when smoke was seen coming from a shop on Binley Road in the early hours of this morning (December 10).
But when crews arrived they found that there was no fire - instead it was smoke from a 'smoke cloak', a device which fills an area with cloud of fog when triggered. This has been triggered as the shop had been raided.
West Midlands Police confirmed they were called to the scene and found that thieves had broken into the shop. An undisclosed amount of cigarettes and money were stolen.
"An investigation is underway, and officers are currently carrying out enquiries to find those responsible," a West Midlands Police spokesperson said.
