An appeals court in the Dominican Republic has ordered a new trial for Wander Franco , the suspended Tampa Bay Rays shortstop who was found guilty of sexually abusing a minor earlier this year.
The ruling on Tuesday came after Franco’s attorneys pushed to have his conviction suspended and sentencing overturned. Prosecutors were seeking a five-year sentence.
The appeals court ruled in favor of Franco and a new panel of judges will oversee the case.
“The court understood that there were many flaws, many omissions...many issues, and decided to send the case to a new trial,” said Teodosio Jáquez, Franco’s attorney.
In June, Franco was convicted of sexually abusing a minor and given a two-year suspended sentence.
