Michigan lawmakers advanced a trio of proposals this week to provide tax discounts for developers and companies that create new jobs, but whether they'll meet Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's goal of landing economic development legislation on her desk before the end of the year remains uncertain.

The momentum at the Capitol comes on the heels of lawmakers' refusal to continue funding the state's largest corporate subsidy program — the Strategic Outreach and Attraction Reserve — which has come under fire as the electric vehicle-related projects it has supported have scaled back, fallen apart and faced fierce local opposition.
