KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Lithium-ion batteries are found in all sorts of devices, and are more than likely in your house right now. According to the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) , part of UL Research Institutes, fires involving these batteries are increasing at an alarming rate, and have resulted in injuries and even deaths.

“These batteries are powering even more of our everyday lives, from our laptops, our cell phones, even e-bikes and e-scooters,” said Nicole Sanders, the public education lead at UL FSRI. “Fifty percent of us don’t realize devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, if misused or mishandled, could start a fire.”

Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries are fast – so fast that you may only have seconds to escape, according to FSRI.
