Democrat Eileen Higgins has won the Miami mayor’s race over a Republican endorsed by President Donald Trump.

Associated Press reporter Adriana Gomez Licon says Higgins’ win on Tuesday became the first Democrat in nearly 30 years to be elected Miami mayor.

“The results were also historic because Higgins is the first woman to be elected mayor of Miami,” Gomez Licon said.

Her win gives Democrats a boost in one of the last electoral battles ahead of the 2026 midterms.

Higgins spoke frequently in the Hispanic-majority city about Trump’s immigration crackdown.

“She regularly talked about the immigration crackdown of President Donald Trump and how it affected residents of Miami. She spoke about this detention center, ‘Alligator Alcatraz,’ where she had to field some calls from her residents who were worries that their family members were being kept there,” Gomez Licon said.

While the election result is a win for Democrats, Gomez Licon keeps the race in prospective heading toward the 2026 midterms.

“It's important to keep in mind that it is a mayoral runoff and the turnout is not comparable to a midterm election or a presidential election,” Gomez Licon said.
