SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KFVS) - Public libraries in Illinois can now supply and administer opioid overdose reversal agents on their premises.
The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has added public libraries to the list of locations that allow properly trained staff to administer naloxone and nalmefene to suspected overdose victims.
Their training includes recognizing the signs of an overdose, learning how to properly dispense the medication and making sure to call 911 for continued care of the overdose victim.
Libraries can now obtain the FDA-approved opioid reversal medication without a prescription.
