GILA RIVER INDIAN COMMUNITY, AZ (AZFamily) — A federal grand jury indicted a Tucson man accused of stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of archaeological artifacts from the Gila River Indian Community.

Leo Reynoso, 46, was indicted last week on charges of unauthorized excavation of archaeological resources and trafficking of archaeological resources after an investigation by the United States Forest Service and Gila River Police Department.

Officials said that Reynoso excavated and removed archaeological items without permission, including Indian Trader tokens, coins, buttons, crucifixes, jewelry and other items on the Gila River Indian Community. He allegedly sold some of the excavated items without a proper permit.

Both are violations of the Archaeological Resources Protection Act.
