TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) - The first property tax amendment is ready for a vote in the full House when the legislative session begins in January.

A third House committee approved a constitutional amendment offering a larger homestead exemption for people paying property insurance. This is one of eight different proposals the House is considering putting before voters next year.

Property taxes are written in the state constitution as a way to fund local government.

The Senate has not made any formal recommendations but is talking with the House about property taxes.

Rep. Toby Overdorf, the House Property Tax Committee chair, said discussions are ongoing with the Senate.
