A woman has described through tears how she “couldn’t save” her sister and three young children after they were killed in a house fire deliberately set by her ex-partner. ‌

Sharaz Ali, 40, has been found guilty of murdering Bryonie Gawith, 29, and her children, Denisty Birtle, nine, Oscar Birtle, five, and 22-month-old Aubree Birtle, in the early hours of August 21, 2024. ‌

Prosecutors told Doncaster Crown Court that Ali was “motivated by jealousy and fuelled by drink and drugs” when he set fire to the Westbury Road property in Bradford. Ali targeted the house to take revenge on his former partner, Antonia Gawith, Bryonie’s sister, following the end of their “abusive” seven-year relationship. ‌
