Every school likes to say it landed its top candidate.

Toledo actually did.

From the outset of its search for a new football coach, Mercer’s Mike Jacobs stood out in a stacked field of hopefuls — including several sitting FBS coaches — and it’s easy to see why.

Some hires are home runs.

This one feels like a grand slam into the upper deck.

Set aside the hometown sentiment — though that’s pretty darn cool — and just look at the record. All the 46-year-old Maumee graduate does is win.

In 10 seasons at the FCS and Division II level, Jacobs is 94-23 with seven conference championships.

Know where that win percentage ranks among all active D-I and II head coaches (minimum: eight years)? Here’s the list:

● 1. Ryan Day, Ohio State, 82-11 (.882).

● 2. Kalen DeBoer, Alabama, 124-19 (.867).
