IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - A new report from the University of Iowa and the ACLU is sparking concern among Iowans after finding that automated license plate readers are tracking drivers across the state with few consistent rules on how that data is handled.
The statewide review shows more than 48 Iowa agencies use the cameras, with some cities deploying more than 50 devices.
Rita Bettis Austen, legal director for the ACLU of Iowa, said most people would never know they’re being scanned.
“ALPR cameras are actually small enough that you likely don’t know that you’re passing one, and there’s nothing in Iowa code that requires that Iowans are told about them,” Bettis Austen said.
