DETROIT, Mich. (WILX) -Today in Michigan history, in 1914, Detroit newsman James Brady sparks the Old Newsboys Goodfellow Fund with one idea: no child should go without a Christmas.

Volunteers fan out with special editions to raise money for shoes, coats, toys and more.

A holiday tradition is born, neighbors helping neighbors, turning headlines into hope across metro Detroit, which eventually caught on here in mid-Michigan.
